Soundarya Thandapani

ABOUT

Soundarya Thandapani is a Chennai-born, London-based visual artist working primarily through photography, with an evolving practice in mixed media. Focusing on identity, inherited womanhood, and belonging, her work carries a quiet attentiveness to people, place, and memory. Drawing from personal narrative, it sits within broader social and cultural contexts that often go unspoken.

Working through staged, performative self-portraiture, she builds intimate scenes from objects and memory, both her own and those inherited from the women before her, to explore what she chooses to hold onto and what she lets go of. Her positionality as a South Asian woman artist runs as a red thread through both her personal and commercial work. Having grown up in Chennai and now based in London, she continues to question what home means, her practice sitting in the in-between, roots held in one soil while she grows in another.

Through this ongoing introspection, she builds a personal narrative rooted in womanhood, offering viewers a piece of their own story to sit with, and perhaps begin to heal from, within her artistic world.
